Gaslighting is a form of psychological abuse in which the abuser attempts to manipulate the victim into doubting their memory, perception, and sanity. It may involve gradually leading the victim to question their feelings, memories, and actions via systematic denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying.

Instances may range from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents ever occurred up to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser to disorient the victim. The victim is often left feeling psychologically beaten down and unable to trust their memory, perception, or judgment.
